Canadian journalist Beverly Giesebrecht responded to the tragedy on 9-11 by converting to Islam, adopting a new name and studying the Koran. Giesebrecht – now know as Khadija Abdul Qahaar – created a website called Jihad Unspun.
Then in November 2008, she was kidnapped by the Taliban in Pakistan – a baffling move given her support for the group on her website. She was seized at gunpoint in the Bannu region of northern Pakistan.
Soon after her disappearance, a video showing Giesebrecht begging for her life was released as demands for ransom were not met. Despite this, some have suggested it’s a scam to raise cash the the Taliban.
At the end of March the dealine for ransom payment of $350,000 was extended by her captors. A Taliban associate said, “there will be no more extension in the deadline. They [the Taliban] are serious.” Canadian athorites in Islamabad are said to working towards securing her release.
