In the end, it was quite a sombre and respectful affair. Folks on stage talked about God a lot. The crowd trouble feared by LAPD didn’t happen and things seemed to go smoothly. For this, we can be thankful; the last thing Jacko needed was another circus.
Many of Jackson’s celebrity friends showed up to pay their dues. Conspicuously absent were Liz Taylor and Diana Ross, who both made their apologies. Usher sang and fought back tears, Brooke Shields spoke about her affection for the singer and John Mayer played an instrumental version of Human Nature. Mariah Carey opened the ceremony, Stevie Wonder and Jennifer Hudson both put in nice performances.
