Barack Obama made a surprise visit to the Iraqi capital, Baghdad. It’s his first visit to the country as President and comes at a time when violent insurgency is on the rise – seven car bombs exploded the day before Obama’s arrival in the war-torn country. The New York Times report that “Air Force One landed at Baghdad International Airport under heavy security at 4:42 p.m. in the afternoon; military officials shut down the airport and roads into the capital were deserted.”
Obama will meet American military commanders and Iraqi leaders, including Iraqi PM Nuri Kamal al-Maliki.
Obama has been in Europe for a week attending the G20 and making a keynote speech in Prague.
