Joaquin Phoenix on Letterman

A very subdued Joaquin Pheonix appeared on Letterman, his stay on set punctuated with awkward silences and mumbled answers. The interview starts badly with Letterman making fun of the actor’s magnificent beard and it’s all downhill from there. The actor, who was promoting his new film Two Lovers, became a little shirty when Letterman and the audience didn’t take his claims of a new career in hip hop music seriously. Is Phoenix losing his mind? Maybe, but Two Lovers director James Gray has confirmed that the actor complained of being tired of acting towards the end of the shoot. At the 2009 Oscars Ben Stiller lampooned Phoenix for his career change.
